Doing ‘The Apprentice’ on the cheap

I’ve been watching The Apprentice on TV3 for a number of weeks now and I’ll say from the outset, it’s really good TV. The bumbling project management and calamity proned stars make for great viewing. Breffni in particular deserves special accreditation in this regard, a real gem.

It does strike me however, that every task is driven by a key sponsor of the show. Meteor have had a heap of coverage so far (the phone pitch and the TV campaign) and I’m sure that they’ll be involved again in the finale. I know if I was managing that sponsorship I’d have us positioned there.

Having watched the UK and American versions, I’m also a little let down by the rewards for the task victors. Again, they’re all freebies – they must be with the amount of coverage they get – and furthermore they’re rubbish. Last week they went wine tasting!! Thankfully Bill Cullen usually stops just short of announcing the company’s latest BOGOF offer or freephone number. In contrast I recall watching one early episode of the American version a few years back when they sent the team to Cancun!

I do appreciate that there’s always going to be a discrepancy in production budgets between TV3 and Microsoft NBC but come on – can’t we do better? Why didn’t they just get the tourist board involved? It’s also a shame that Bill Cullen is tied into the show at a time when the Car Sales industry is mired in the recession. He’s not a particulaly good showman either – certainly no ‘Sir Alan’.

Anyway.. rant over. I’m back writing again on the site after a brief sabbatical – all comments and complaints welcome.
