Drawing a Redline under the bars of Smithfield

On Friday night I took a rare, and overdue, trip to the Dice Bar in Smithfield to take in some of the Red Line roots festival. The spirit and buzz in the place was fantastic with bar staff at one point attempting human pyramids – when that happens you know you must be on to a good thing.

Musically I saw Murder Plan and D-66, both of which were excellent. D-66 in particular had attracted me with his ‘one man psychobilly train wreck to bluesville’ tag line and he certainly lived up to the expectation I’d been building all week. It was an excellent set which reminded me, at different moments, of anything from The Strokes right through to John Spencer Blues explosion. I’ve seen a few one man acts recently, RSAG being the highlight of which at this years’ Castlepalooza, but D-66 really stood out. A fantastic performance at an intimate and exciting venue that I’ll certainly be back to.

Here’s his track Caroline from youtube.
